The stamp lists the address as CITYHUS in Aarhus.
Cityhus is a named building which stands at the corner of Klostergade and Studsgade in Aarhus (Århus). There is a picture online, taken in 1995, of the building, at: www.aarhusarkivet.dk/records/000381130 |
This poster stamp was issued in the Spring of 1914, in an issue of 25,000. It was announced in the 16 April 1914 issue of Samlermærket, the house newsletter produced by Andreasen & Lachmann. |
This stamp depicts the date August 23, 1910, and a biplane
over the city skyline. This is a reference to pioneer Danish aviator Robert Svendsen (1884-1938) who flew his biplane over the Limfjord - the first time it had been done. Svendsen is more famous for his July 17, 1910 flight across the Øresund (from Kløvermarken, København to Limhamn Sweden). |
Text reads: "It doesn't matter what you do with the cold cuts, the cheese and meat, as long as you have Aalborg Margarine on your bread."
|
Here are company listings in the Krak's Vejviser business directories for the years 1920 (above) and 1921 (right). Both advertisements reference the award won at the Brussels International Exhibition in 1910. The 1921 advertisement uses the same image as on one of the poster stamps, but without the reference to Robert Svendsen's flight over the Limfjord. |
This stamp, issued in 1945 to commemorate the firm's 25th anniversary, depicts four of the company's ubiquitous yellow buses. They appear to be the Triangel "Elefant"style buses as built by DFA in Odense in the 1930s. The buses are parked in front of Jens Bangs Stenhus in Aalborg. |
This is a mærkat-style stamp, printed c.1949.

This is a mærkat-style stamp, printed c. 1958/59.
Text at top translates to: Aalborg Stiftstidende covers 84% of Greater Aalborg Text at bottom translates to: Advertise there - where you can see for yourself |
These stamps use a photographic image of the storefront, in sepia-tone,
with no frame. This style is one of several types commonly referred to as "butiks-facade", and is seen on many stamps. |
These stamps are die-cut and embossed. It is unclear if the two stamps on the right are printed with different ink colors, or are simply shade varieties of the same color. |

The poster stamps issued by CAE (Carl Aller's Etablissement) comprise a complicated series. There are 36 different designs in the series, and most of them represent various parts of the company which is now known as Aller Media. The exceptions are three stamps which appear to represent "public service" messages, and one stamp (Carl Larsens Boghandel) that advertises a book dealer who probably was one of the main outlets for much of CAE's printed output. The 36 stamps, and information about them, can be found by clicking HERE. |

In all there were 48 issues of the newsletter published twice monthly between 8/16/1913 and 12/1/1915. This stamp was published in an issue size of 40,000. |

This stamp depicts Carl Albert Andreasen and his wife Olivia (nee Andersson) on the occasion of their 25th wedding anniversary, November 2, 1914.
This was probably strictly a vanity project, but it is unknown if it was commissioned by Carl, or if it was an anniversary gift created by the A&L staff. The only example I have seen was mounted in an Andreasen & Lachmann poster stamp album along with the six stamps above. |
This stamp is similar in appearance and size to the other 7 stamps shown in this section. The text on this stamp refers to A&L's trip (as an exhibitor) to the Baltic Exhibition in Malmö, Sweden in 1914.
The design of the stamp mimics the official exhibition poster created by Swedish artist Ernst Norlind. |
At some point the company began manufacturing creams and polishes for the care of shoes and other leather items. The text at the bottom of this stamp translates to: ASGOG Leather Creme and Rubber Heels So it would appear that the care portion of the business became more important as a consumer product. |
The issue of this stamp was announced in the 1 May 1914 issue of Samlermærket, A&L's house newsletter. The issue size was 25,000 stamps. The text translates to: "Try your luck at Charles Aueners Lottery Office" |
Stamp at left advertises the firm's "Lady" brand of cigarette, with a design by noted artist Gerda Wegener. According to Wikipedia: Gerda Marie Fredrikke Wegener (1886-1940) was a Danish illustrator and painter. Wegener is known for her fashion illustrations and later her paintings that pushed the boundaries of her time concerning gender and love. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Stamp at right advertises the firm's "Record" brand of cigarette, with text: "Smoke Record, with gold and cork tip" The back of the stamp shows package sizes and prices. "Available everywhere" |
This stamp uses a photographic image of the storefront and text in dark blue, with a typeset decorative outer frame line, in red. This color combination often shows considerable darkening of the colors over time, with the red appearing as brown. This style is one of several types commonly referred to as "butiks-facade", and is seen on many stamps. |
At Left
This appears to have been printed in 1936. It shows no evidence of gum, and may have been a proof. At Right This is an advertisement from Kraks Vejviser - 1922 Handelspejl (Business Directory) It shows the newly formed company resulting from the merger of two prior businesses. |
This stamp appears to
be on tan paper, but it may just be discolored. |
