Welcome DK Cinderellas is a new website I have created to catalog and describe the various types of "cinderella" stamps of Denmark. Many of these items have never been cataloged before in any systematic fashion. I have been collecting stamps for over 50 years, and more recently have specialized in the cinderella stamps of Denmark and related areas. I have always loved the stamps of Denmark because of my Danish family heritage, and I was always drawn to the more unusual types of material. I have also been a stamp dealer, both part-time and full-time, for around 40 years, specializing in cinderella philately. (See links at the bottom of this page) I hope you will find this website helpful and interesting. It is brand new as of May, 2021, and it will take a long time to add all the content I have available, but I will publish it in its incomplete form and add to it as time permits. If anyone has questions about the subject matter, or suggestions for the website, feel free to contact me by email at [email protected] Thank you, Ray Petersen |
If you are unfamiliar with the term “cinderellas” as it relates to stamp collecting, click here.
The majority of the material that will be covered in this website are loosely considered “Poster Stamps”. While these items once had a fairly narrow description – a stamp-like object that portrayed, in miniature, a life-size poster – there are many non-postal stamps that are commonly referred to as poster stamps.
This website will attempt to catalog some of this material in a manner that is somewhat consistent with traditional stamp catalogs. Because there is a lot of topical or thematic crossover in the poster stamp field, this website will also be useful to collectors who form their collections based on different criteria. Because many items listed here would fit into more than one category, you may find some items listed in multiple locations.
Note regarding alphabetization: Because the vast majority of the material listed here was produced before 1948, the Danish letter AA / aa will appear at the beginning of the alphabet rather than at the end, when the letter Å / å was re-introduced and later officially placed at the end of the Danish alphabet. Most of the alphabetic listings of names and places beginning with Aa appeared at the beginning of the listings in the period up to the mid 1960s in many cases.
Every item illustrated here is from my own collections, unless otherwise noted.
The drop-down menues will offer links to the various sections in the website, which will also contain many subsections.
The drop-down menu headings are also clickable, and there is additional information found there.
Areas covered on this website
Poster Stamps - This category consists of Advertising as well as Event Promotion Poster Stamps. Also included in this area are Publicity and Fundraising Stamps. Some Mærkat style poster stamps will be included in the listings, but this is not intended to be a comprehensive catalog of those issues.
Fee & Financial Stamps - This category covers non-revenue types of fee stamps, as well as other financial type items, such as membership dues for trade unions or political parties. Also included will be savings, trading and rebate stamps.
Labels - This category includes all types of Baggage Labels, as well as product and matchbox labels. Other miscellaneous labels and letter seals will be included here.
Measurements
All measurements of items will usually be indicated in millimeters (mm.), but sometimes will be expressed in inches (" or in.). Measurements will be indicated as horizontal X vertical.
When a stamp measurement is given, it is usually referred to as "Image Size". This is generally meant to indicate the portion of the stamp that is taken up by the image and text on the stamp, including borders or backgrounds, but not including printer's imprint. This measurement is taken, rather than the actual size of the stamp, because of differences in perforations and other separations of stamps that can result in much different sizes for the same stamp. If a stamp has an all-over background that extends between stamps, that background will not be included in the measured area.
Some stamps such as die-cuts, especially free form shapes, may be measured from actual edge to edge, rather than just the image size. Also, some stamps have designs that may extend beyond the normal "image areas" of the stamp. In these cases, measurements may be indicated as "Stamp Size" or "Item Size" and will be measured from edge to edge.
Pricing Guidelines
Pricing guidelines will be offered at various points, but the cinderella field is very narrow, and there are wide variations in retail prices. This is partly due to normal rules of supply and demand, but also because of a lack of knowledge surrounding this material.
As a general rule of thumb I consider that Event Publicity Poster Stamps (also known as Exhibition Labels) should generally be valued at $10 and up for pre-1900 items; in the $3 - $8 range for items from 1900 to around 1920; and $5 and below for items post-1920.
(All pricing references to $ are considered US Dollars)
For Advertising Poster Stamps and other Publicity Poster Stamps the pricing is generally in the under $10 range.
The exceptions to generic pricing details largely center on topical appeal. Certain topics are more widely collected than others, and this can greatly affect pricing.
Beyond any vague suggestions like those outlined here, the bottom line is that if you see a stamp that you need, and have not seen it before, you should buy it if you can afford it, because you may not see it again.
Areas NOT covered here
There are MANY thousands of Danish (and area) cinderellas that are not covered in this website, because they are already well-documented or cataloged elsewhere. Here is a list of some of those other areas, along with catalogs or handbooks that may be helpful.
